Aims of the Department

Our aims in the History Department are: 

To help our pupils to understand the present social, political, religious and economic climate 

To develop knowledge of various terms, concepts, events, ideals, problems personalities and principles

To encourage pupils to recall facts

To help our pupils to gain confidence in comparing, contrasting, describing and examining key historical event

Key Stage Four Curriculum

Aim

We aim to provide our GCSE pupils with a high quality of education which adequately prepares them for their GCSE examinations and which gives them an in-depth knowledge and understanding of both the past and present.

Topics covered

In Year 11, pupils study the content of Paper 1.  Pupils complete an in-depth study of::

  • Life in Nazi Germany, 1933-45

  • Changing Relations:  Northern Ireland and its Neighbours, 1920-49

Assessment

Paper 1 is externally assessed at the end of Year 11. Pupils will sit an exam which lasts 1 hour 45 minutes.  The exam mark is worth 60% of the overall qualification.  An opportunity to resit the exam is available at the end of Year 12..

In Year 12, pupils study the content of Paper 2.  Pupils complete an outline study of International Relations, 1945-2003. Paper 2 is externally assessed at the end of Year 12.  Pupils sit an exam which lasts 1 hour 15 minutes.  The exam mark is worth 40% of the overall qualification.

Key Stage Five Curriculum  

Aim

We aim to support our A Level pupils in building upon the knowledge gained at both Key Stage 3 and 4 in Larne High School.  We will encourage our pupils to develop the necessary literacy skills they must have to write competently about Historical events using an academic tone.

Assessment

AS 1 is externally assessed at the end of Year 13.  Pupils will sit an exam which lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.  The exam mark is work 50% of As and 20% of the A Level. 

AS 2 is externally assessed at the end of Year 13.  Pupils sit an exam which lasts 1 hour 30 minutes.  The exam mark is work 50% of as and 20% of the A Level.

A2 1 is externally assessed at the end of Year 14.  Pupils will sit an exam which lasts 1 hour.  The exam IS worth 20% of the A Level. 

A2 2 is externally assessed at the end of Year 14.  Pupils sit an exam which lasts 2 hour 30 minutes.  The exam is worth 40% of the A Level. 

In addition to the externally assessed examinations pupils will undertake, additional tracking assessments will be used throughout the academic year.
