Aims

The English Department aims to:

  • create an environment in which pupils are encouraged to succeed and reach their potential;

  • enable pupils to develop their skills in reading, writing talking and listening;

  • enable pupils to work independently and as part of a team;

  • meet the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

 

Key Stage Three

In Years 8–10 pupils follow a programme of study based on the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

Units of work aim to prepare all pupils for KS4 study.

 Key Stage Four 

GCSE English Language - CCEA

In Years 11 and 12 pupils follow a compulsory course of English Language GCSE.  This is a two year course which builds on the broad objectives of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

GCSE English Language helps pupils to:

·       engage with spoken and written language;

·       explore texts, words and images;

·       learn how to express opinions, form independent views and challenge ideas.

Course Content

UNIT 1: EXAM 30%

·       Writing for Purpose and Audience and Reading to Access Non-fiction and Media Text

UNIT 2: SPEAKING AND LISTENING 20%

·       Task 1 – Individual presentation and interaction

·       Task 2 – Group discussion

·       Task 3 – Role play

Unit 3: CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT 20%

·       Studying Spoken and Written Language

Unit 4: EXAM 30%

·       Personal or Creative Writing and Reading Literary and Non-Fiction texts

 

GCSE English Literature - CCEA

Pupils can choose to study English Literature at GCSE.

GCSE English Literature helps to: 

·       develop creative, individual responses to problems; 

·       develop independent study skills that help pupils prepare for further study or employment;

·       nurture an interest in reading.

UNIT 1: EXAM 30%

-       The study of drama and poetry

UNIT 3: 20%

-       The study of Shakespeare
