Aims of Department

The school welcomes pupils from all backgrounds and of all abilities. We recognise that at various stages in a child’s education they can need additional support, and the school has an excellent track record in supporting children with all kinds of additional needs. Individual Education Plans are devised for many pupils who require specific support in the mainstream classroom – this can include, for example, work being presented in a given format to help with dyslexia, notes being printed for pupils, ICT being made available or extra time in tests and assessments. The principle that guides us is always to put the individual needs of the young person at the centre of all that we do, and always to involve the young person in the decision making process. Some children require a greater level of support and this can come in a variety of forms.

The school has expanded its Learning Support provision to cater for young people with Moderate Learning Difficulties. Children linked to the Learning Support Centre get targeted small group teaching in some subjects including English and Mathematics, and at the same time access many other areas of the curriculum with their peers.
