Sixth form pupils using laptops

Introduction

  • Larne High School has one of the most advanced ICT networks in the NEELB.

  • Many individual subject areas have access to their own ICT facilities i.e. Business Studies & Home Economics.

  • The school also boasts 4 state of the art ICT suites, including 1 wireless laptop labs (excluding other departmental ICT labs i.e. Business Studies, Home Economics & Technology).

  • All staff are ICT trained to the highest standard i.e. Learning NI.

  • Training is up to date and on-going each year.

  • An ICT Technician is also available for any additional support.

Key Stage Three

Courses and Qualifications

As well as ICT provided within subject areas, all Year 8 and 9 pupils have the opportunity to learn ICT in their first year at the school. In Year 10, ICT is provided within subject areas and all students are entered for CCEA's Using ICT qualification.

Qualification Aim

Today’s work environment depends increasingly on a range of technologies. The OCN NI Level 2 Award and Certificate in Information Technology Applications are designed to provide learners with the IT skills required to function successfully in the work and wider environment.

Qualification Target Group

IT skills are now required by almost everyone at work and to survive in society. These qualifications are targeted at learners who are currently in employment and those seeking employment. They are also suitable for school and college students and for adults who wish to acquire a good standard of IT skills and gain an accredited qualification.

Methods of Assessment

Methods of Assessment will be as listed in the unit details. All evidence will be internally assessed by qualified centre assessors and internally verified by the approved centres. External verification visits and monitoring activities will be conducted with centres annually to confirm the evaluation of risk and compliance and to ensure the integrity of the qualification.

Assessment guidance for each unit is contained in OCN NI’s Unit Template and centres should design the method of assessment in accordance with OCN NI’s Assessment Methods Document.

The Cambridge Technicals in IT have been developed to meet the changing needs of the sector, and prepare your students for the challenges they’ll face in Higher Education or employment. Designed in collaboration with experts spanning the breadth of the sector, the Cambridge Technicals in IT focuses on the skills, knowledge and understanding that today’s universities and employers demand. Students will practically apply their skills and knowledge in preparation for further study or the workplace.

This qualifications aims to develop students knowledge and understanding of the principles of IT and Global Information Systems. Students will gain an insight into the IT sector as they investigate the pace of technological change, IT infrastructure, and the flow of information on a global scale and the importance of legal and security considerations.

Students will also develop professional, personal and social skills through interaction with peers, stakeholders and clients, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills. These support the transferable skills required by universities and employers such as communication, problem solving, time management, research and analytical skills.
